Abstract

Bioinformatics has become an interdisciplinary scientific field that integrates molecular biology, genetics, computer science, applied mathematics, and statistics to process and interpret large-scale biological data. This article analyzes the consolidation of bioinformatics in Argentina through a bibliometric study of its scientific production published in internationally indexed journals. An exploratory research design was adopted using bibliometric techniques applied to records retrieved from the PubMed database. The analysis examines publication trends, institutional participation, international collaboration networks, research team composition, and indicators of scientific visibility.

The findings reveal sustained growth in Argentina's scientific output since the late 1980s, together with increasing institutional diversification, expanding international collaboration, and a growing presence in internationally recognized journals. These results suggest the progressive consolidation of bioinformatics as an interdisciplinary scientific field within the Argentine research system, supported by the development of scientific capabilities, specialized research communities, and stronger integration into global scientific networks.

The article argues that bibliometric indicators provide valuable evidence for examining specific dimensions of scientific development, while acknowledging that they capture only part of broader processes of institutionalization, capacity building, and knowledge transfer. Accordingly, scientific publications are interpreted as an observable manifestation of the consolidation of the field rather than as a comprehensive measure of its overall development. Finally, the paper identifies future research directions aimed at incorporating institutional, technological, and innovation-related dimensions to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of bioinformatics in Argentina.
