Abstract

This article analyzes community-based tourism as a social practice of encounter and transformation, drawing on the case of the Suyay Pachamama Cooperative and two "High-Altitude Experiences" (Experiencias de Altura) developed within the tourism corridors of Salta (Pachamama Kusilla Kusilla) and Jujuy (Pachamama Jalalla) in northwestern Argentina.

The article examines the dynamics of encounter and transformation in community-based tourism through a situated analysis of this case. Adopting a qualitative approach guided by an ethnographic perspective, the study combines participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a review of operational documents to reconstruct how interactions among cooperative members, visitors, and the territory are produced and imbued with meaning in concrete situations.

The results demonstrate that community-based tourism generates income and brings local knowledge to the fore, although tensions linked to rural inequalities, seasonality, and digital divides persist.
