Abstract

The salt flats located in the Argentine puna (Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy) contain in their brines the third world reserve of lithium, an alkali metal with high electrochemical potential and very low density, which is used for the development of the new generation of electrochemical accumulators that it demands portable electronics and the nascent electric vehicle industry. The development of extractive projects for more than two decades has led the country to position itself today among the world's leading lithium exporters.

This article aims to address the historical background of that development, which spans the period known as Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI), from the 1930s until the outbreak of the last military dictatorship, self-proclaimed National Reorganization Process 1976-1983.
