Abstract

The present work asks about the legitimization of political disobedience in Hume and tries to show that, although this philosopher does not offer specific rules in this regard, he formulates a general rule interpretable in terms of a certain circular link between obedience, property and utility. Being disobedience a central theme in political philosophy, it is framed in a previous tradition, so I will first offer a general characterization of its concept, then a synthesis of its treatment in the contractualist tradition (restricting myself to Hobbes and Locke) and finally, a small analysis of his justification in Hume.
